A) As a student of History, this historian weeps every time I turn a new page to REAL stories of our Past. More will follow over time.
B) Our federal government, in the 19th century, set out to assimilate what were left of our once proud Native American people and cultures into an existing "national identity." Children were taken away from their parents and "homes" and sent to boarding schools to become typical "Americans", including learning and being taught proper English and to wear typical "American" clothes. NO centuries-old traditions and customs from previous tribal cultures were tolerated!
C) Reminds me, also, of what happened in Australia with the Australoids, Aborigines, culture. PLEASE check out, especially view, "RABBIT PROOF FENCE". This film is PG and came out in 2002, with Peter Gabriel's soundtrack. YOU will follow the "Long Walk Home" through the eyes of Molly. I hope that you will realize the importance of either reading the book or viewing this film, or both, to understand more about the plight of the original first Australians!
